I think when we mention losing member cards, we mean more for the idea of "you have to complete number x through y."
And this is why I suggested removing the numbers altogether. ^_^
Because even if life does kick you in the head, hey, other people gotta take care of their stuff too. And if they're wasting space *coughs at a few certain people*, why shouldn't their cards be removed if they're hindering other people by making it impossible? XD Nor is it not like someone can't get another, ya know?
Especially when I contacted many someones about a MC when they *were* active to just ignore it and then later go inactive... *rambles*
And I didn't know retired member cards were "worthless," considering I still have them going towards my card worth like the old ones. ^_^ To my knowledge, we haven't been penalizing you because other members quit.
(Besides, a few of those hiatus members are more-'n-likely not coming back. Sad, but true. Mostly the ones who have been gone for months. Plus we have to think about Calico/Mysty who are NEVER coming back unless a miracle happens. But for Calico, since she's a status-symbol, I personally think hers should be handed out when someone gets their member card...)
Who the freak knew MCs could be so debatable?

Ah, well. That's more reasonable. >>;;;;
(This is where Chani has a small whiny, bratty rant about not wanting to have to reorganize her member card page or get all the new member cards. And now she's done and is all grown up now.)
A lot of these details won't matter if we go to a 'certain number of member cards = a mastery' idea, really. If that's the case, these hiatus people can keep their cards, on the off-chance they ever come back.
And yeah, you're right, people should get Calico's card as part of their member card package. I think I did, but I think that was when Calico did the cards.
I swear, I was told once that retired member cards had no card worth. I don't remember where, but I think it was back when we had our first replacement member card. I should go try to find that.

Thing is, I haven't kept my retired member cards though so if we were to change the rules for this, I could easily have mastered another set already which I won't be able to do anymore because I've been replacing numbers.
I like the idea though because it makes it so much easier. Then you also don't have to look at the numbers to see where it fits in.

maybe make the cards that are on an infanite hiatus should be a free for all, letting members grab the cards they need, that way we can continue the sets and get past the first 3 and let more cards be made, only removing the ones from people who have quit.

Since Member card sets don't count as masteries when calculating level, the only thing they're good for is getting those three or four cards with each level up. And with only three complete sets at best, we're only talking a dozen or so cards (in a game where people have 1500, 2000 cards total).
MY suggestion? Just drop the masteries altogether. They don't count anyway, there's not a significant reward to be had....just start making member cards, numbered sequentially, and make one set of 43 or however many cards. When someone drops out, just make Card #44 and keep going. The people who traded for that card get credit for it, but no one else will be able to trade for it after the fact.
Remember, we had this problem with defining "inactive" members during the Olympics. Someone can sign up and then go on infinite hiatus, and it's a judgment call whether they're really even a current member or not if they totally disappear possibly never to return. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell an inactive member listed on "hiatus" from someone with a broken hard drive or a ton of exams or other real life troubles. Not until the person comes back, that is.
Masteries for Member card sets are also weird because on top of not being able to get one card you might need because of someone going inactive, the other is true as well. You can have 20 cards, and then realize that three of those are now inactive and you have to trade for even more to get a complete set of 20 active members.
Plus with the current system of replacing member cards in current sets, such that Card #5 goes inactive after a while, is taken down, and then a new member signs up and is issued a new Card #5....that gets confusing to tally up the total. You only get credit for the first time you trade...such that the first time I traded for Card #5 with the old user it counts, but it doesn't count now that there is a new Card #5. If we just counted a trade as a trade and added the new member as Card #47 or whatever's next, it would fix that as well.
Much easier all the way around. Just my two cents, though....YMMV.

Just hopping in to say that I've been a member since prejoin, and I haven't mastered any member card set yet. ^^;

I think it should just be that 20 member cards = 1 mastered set. Eliminate the need for numbers (especially because I think it's unfair that my member card is in the second set even though I've been a member since prejoin week 2, and new members get member cards in the first set...). Even if a person whose member card you have leaves and the member card is retired, you've still put in the effort to get 20 cards.
Also, it eliminates the debate on how long a hiatus should be before you lose your member card. If I were a new member, I think it would be cruel to have that thrown at me.

I think Nash has a good point. If we get rid of the masteries if they really don't have a good purpose. Also, to make things easier if we do it that way.. How about not replacing a number? If #23 drops out, just retire the number and keep moving up.. It's really confusing if a new member takes over an old members number.

Wow, you guys have such good ideas!! *_*
I doubt that we'll do away with masteries altogether (to be honest), but instead, something like .... what I said before, what with the 20 cards = 1 mastery, but it doesn't *matter* if someone in your first or second mastery has quit, you know? Their card gets retired, but that's it; you don't have to take it down, or anything, which makes it much easier for me (as the lady who keeps up with member cards) and members themselves to handle.
And I just can't imagine erasing someone's member card with the current system. I would feel like such a witch! XD That's why I like the idea of just doing away with mastering sets (the current system), because then we can just leave the hiatus-ed and inactive ones (or even quitters, ideally) and keep building on after KCKAJI (the last card on the list). You know? Many of our members quit and come back, and then they could just "reclaim" their card and go on their merry business. And if they just get retired when members quit, they don't have to be subtracted from your card count ... new members just can't get them anymore, which gives the older members perks (which they always love XD).
But from the looks of the response from everyone, there will be SOME kind of change. <3

Hmm... If we get rid of set masteries (1-20, 21-40, etc), I wonder how you guys would take to redoing the member cards to get rid of the numbers? XD Since things are definitely going to change... But just how remains the question now, haha.

You should make more special sets then. <333 The other parallel children would be lovely, as well as that youma deck that's been empty for SO LONG. XD

Ah, well that sounds very reasonable! Keeping everyone's cards, and just build up from there =)

I know my vote was for "other", but count me down as a "yes" officially. I'd still prefer my proposed system, however, as it is the easiest to implement and the easiest to maintain, and wouldn't even require any edits to the cards themselves.
It's quick, it's simple, it's effortless, and there would be no special rules or regulations about what counts when and what doesn't. Just add new cards one at a time as members join, and let people trade each other for cards (upping their total) but do not award masteries. The only downside is that you don't get those 3-4 cards after you "master" a set, but since the cards for retired members would still keep their value you'd still come out ahead there as well. Each trade would count, no matter if a member did drop out or go on hiatus or anything else...wouldn't matter either way.
And the best part is that there is no judgment calls about who is "inactive" and who is on "semi-permanent hiatus", no confusing rules on how the decks count for masteries in some cases but not in others, no rulings on when a trade counts toward your total and when it doesnt, and no need to re-train all the players with a new way of doing things. Problem solved.

Problem solved. Sensible. *nods* But I just can't in good faith do away with masteries. XD Hence why I think my option is probably the closest to yours. Since with my system, inactive or hiatus doesn't really even matter because their "spot" won't be OMG CRUCIALZ anymore. XD
