I wrote this a while ago, but princess tutu needs all the love it can get. ;D
So. This series recently got licensed by Madman. <.<;; Well there goes my birthday money. ;>.>
For the uninitiated!Run. No, faster!
This is a series, in which I can not be expected to speak rationally of.
Princess Tutu is a series about a Duck.
No really.
It's allllllll about a duck.
Okay there's some ballet in there
But it's still about a duck.
Of course it's about a duck that turns into a girl, that can turn into PRINCESS TUTU! To live a secret life where shefights crime must find the heart shards to rescue her prince, Mythos.
But she's still a duck. Seriously even her name Ahiru in the Japanese version, just means duck, as in it is the literal day to day word for duck. This is also her name in the English version. Duck.
So why do you watch a series about a duck?
Because the storyline and the characters are so good. It's also very funny at times.
Forget the name, princess tutu is a series that goes above and beyond the limits it seems to have based on it's name and genre (It's a magical girls series, in the same vein as card captors sakura and sailor moon).
It has some amazing symbolism with fairy tales within fairy tales, and things that only a mature audience would be able to pick up on.
Ahiru though she seems a typical shoujo girl at first, clumsy but bright and friendly, is genuinely sweet and really grows on you as the story progresses.
The character development is pretty good too, Mythos is fascinating to watch as he regains his emotions. Rue and Fakia are two characters who I started off, as really not liking at all, but at the end of the series, Rue remains one of the most sympathetic villains I have ever seen.
And Fakia became my favourite character of the series. XD
I'm serious, I really disliked him in about episode three, and now he's my fave character. That's some REAL GOOD character development, I'm telling you!
The first 13 episodes, generally referred to the first season, generally remains cute and light and funny, and could generally be taken as complete.
But it's the second season of 13 two part episodes, which really made this series for myself. It's this part where you the really intricate parts of the story line come out. It's where relationships turn upside down and your pushed to really change your minds about characters.
It's this part that really draws out some of the dark parts of fairy tales, and shows the original nature of this show.
If your a classical music fan, this series, I would consider a must see - they choose the music very well, very appropriately, the stories within the music match the story lines a little too for it to be coincidence.
Even if you don't like ballet, well I'm not a huge fan of it either, I do think this is a series that most people can enjoy.
Despite it's name and genre, it is a true classic, and it really rises above those limitations.
So why watch it?
Because it has unique and interesting characters.
Because it has beautiful animation
Because it draws upon fairy tale motifs and expands on them in an interesting way
Because it has pretty pretty ballet
Because manly men wear tights
BECAUSE OTHER WISE MR CAT WILL MAKE YOU MARRY HIM!
FOR THE DUCK!!!!!!!!!!~
